Sadie Balkind Scholarship Awardee 2023/2024 - Alice Docking

Alice Docking was our successful awardee for the 2023/2024 Sadie Balkind Scholarship. Alice shares her story below.

Ki te mihi au ki a Graduate Women Canterbury mō tō tautoko i te tau nei.  I whanau mai au ki Tāmaki Makaurau, nō reira I tipu ake au ki Ōtautahi. I was born in Auckland, however, I grew up in Christchurch. My whanau are from Waitaha-Canterbury. I spent many holidays camping and tramping across Waitaha, and have a strong sense of familiarity with this area. I am a second-year Master of Planning Student at Te Whare Wanaka o Aoraki (Lincoln University); where I am completing a dissertation on Rangatahi Māori and Local Government Planning and Decision-Making. I am also a student at Te Wananga o Aotearoa studying Rōnakitanga (a Diploma in Te Reo Māori). In a youth representative capacity, I sit on the ECan Regional Leadership Climate and Community Resilience Committee (RLCCRC), the Selwyn-Waihora Water zone Committee (SWC) and Co-chaired the ECan Youth Rōpū in 2023. Provision and exercise of genuine engagement is of importance to me given the intergenerational nature of the outcomes of our planning and decision-making. The Sadie Balkind Scholarship is a significant support, that will aid me in the completion of my studies. It reduces financial pressures, allowing me to focus more time and energy on my studies and representative roles. Thank you again GWC.
