Helen Wily Scholarship 2023 Recipients

Annually the board award the Helen Wily scholarship administered through the University of Canterbury. The value of this award is $500 and this year, the award was split between two deserving students. The purpose of this prize is to support female students who excel in mathematical sciences at 300 or 400-level.

Below is an expert from both recipients of the 2023 award, Tess Grant and Emma Hogan

Tess Grant -

My name is Tess and I am really excited to have received this prize! I graduated with an honours degree in mathematics from UC in 2022. My research project was focused on how craft activities can be used to develop an understanding of non-trivial mathematical concepts (such as topology or fractals). Whilst I am currently taking a year long break from my studies to work as a teaching lecturer in the maths and stats department at UC, I look forward to putting the prize money towards supporting further studies in 2024. Specifically, I am planning on doing a Masters of Teaching and Learning, to then go on to work as a high school maths teacher. (Although, the idea of doing further research is certainly exciting!)

Emma Hogan -

I am a Master's student at the University of Canterbury, currently nearing the submission of a thesis in matroid theory. I completed my undergraduate degree here at UC, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science, before deciding to further pursue my passion for Mathematics. In the future, I plan to continue my academic studies overseas and will commence a Ph.D. in Mathematics at the University of Oxford later this year. The Helen Wily prize will assist me in covering course-related expenses while I complete my Master's thesis.
